Twins have been born to a couple in the US from embryos frozen over 30 years ago, in what is believed to be a new record.
The twin embryos were created in April 1992 for a couple undergoing IVF using an egg donor and stored in liquid nitrogen at -196⁰C. The couple donated the embryos to others in 2007 and parents Rachel and Philip Ridgeway had the embryos transferred earlier this year.
Treatment for the couple was organised by the faith-based organisation the National Embryo Donation Centre who has helped birth more than 1200 babies.
Dr. David Gordon, who performed the embryo transfer, hopes that the birth reassures couples of the success of using embryos cryopreserved for long periods.
