The World Health Organization (WHO) and TikTok have announced a year-long partnership aimed at providing reliable, science-based health information to the platform’s global audience. This collaboration reflects WHO’s commitment to using digital communication to promote health literacy, healthy behaviours, and combat misinformation. Social media, including TikTok, is a growing source of news, especially for young adults, but it can also spread misinformation. The WHO and TikTok collaboration seeks to address this by promoting evidence-based content and fostering positive health discussions.
Dr. Jeremy Farrar, WHO’s Chief Scientist, emphasized the potential of this partnership, noting that platforms like TikTok offer an opportunity to reach diverse audiences with credible health information. With over a billion users, TikTok is well-positioned to spread health awareness, fight stigmas, and provide resources to those in need. Valiant Richey, TikTok's Global Head of Trust and Safety Outreach, highlighted the platform’s commitment to delivering reliable mental well-being content by partnering with WHO’s Fides network of health influencers.
Launched in 2020, the Fides network mobilizes health content creators to counter misinformation and promote evidence-based messaging. With 800 creators reaching 150 million people, Fides will play a key role in enhancing the collaboration’s outreach. Dr. Alain Labrique, WHO’s Director of Digital Health and Innovation, stressed the importance of creators in bridging the gap between science and everyday life. The partnership will focus on translating health information into accessible video content, supporting influencers through TikTok’s training programs, and expanding efforts on various health topics.
