Conference in Chile

Conference in Chile Planer will be exhibiting in South America after a very long time at the 1st International Scientific Meeting for the Optimization of Murine Models in Research - January 24-26 2012, so please come along and visit our booth! We will be exhibiting our range of benchtop incubators with and without humidity control, alarms & monitoring systems and controlled rate freezers.

This conference is designed for pre- and post-graduate students, technicians, professionals and researchers involved in work with murine models in laboratories and laboratory animal housing models. Conference Objectives: Present and discuss different issues related to the production, work and development of murine models in research, laboratory animal housing where they are generated and/or maintained, and determination prior and subsequent to this generation. Lectures will be aimed to improve the technical and ethical aspects that this area involves.

Location: Valdivia, Chile
Address: Av. Arturo Prat 514 (Centro de Estudios Científicos-CECs)

Planer Supporting PhD Student to Test Cryo Preservation of Larger Volume Cells Using Planer Liquidus Tracker

Planer Supporting PhD Student to Test Cryo Preservation of Larger Volume CellsSunbury, November 2011: Planer, a leading manufacturer of controlled temperature products, is proud to be helping finance a PhD student at University College London. Eva Puschmann is undertaking three years of research into novel cryopreservation methods for the bio-artificial liver project. Planer are helping to finance her PhD under the IMPACT scheme which links the best UCL research expertise with progressive science and technology companies.

Eva will be utilising, amongst other equipment, a new Planer freezer to experiment with the cryo preservation of larger volumes of liver cells. A bio-artificial liver support mechanism has long been a goal for supporting acute liver insufficiency, but a problem in translation has always been the supply of viable liver cells in sufficient quantities for clinical application. In many cases the onset of the liver failure is rapid and unpredictable and there is no time to prepare the 10-day culture, which means that a cryo-bank of the cells is a requirement.

Steve Butler, Technical Director explains some of the techniques Puschmann will be using: "Eva will be using the controlled vitrification machine – the Liquidus Tracker – in the search of a solution for cooling densely packed, large volumes of the specially treated liver cells down to cryogenic temperatures whilst avoiding ice nucleation – the principle underpinning liquidus tracking. It is hoped the machine's programmable increase in cryoprotectant concentration and linked cooling profile rates should prevent the formation of ice by maintaining the whole volume just above the liquidus curve."

Eva Puschmann is originally from Mainz, Germany but now resides in London. She brings her all-round scientific experience from exposure in academic labs including the University of Chile, the Clinical Centre Mannheim, and the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ), as well as industrial labs including Boehringer Ingelheim, Orpegen Pharma and Abbott Diagnostic, giving her the skills and experience necessary to hit the ground running.

Distributor Meeting in Stockholm

Distributor Meeting in Stockholm It was a tight squeeze when sixty of our closest friends helped us take over a restaurant in Stockholm this summer.

The occasion was our popular Distributor Meeting which took place at the same time as the ESHRE fertility congress in Stockholm in July, 2011.

This Distributor Meeting is principally aimed at our European distributors but whether it was the company, the food or the free polo shirts, we ended up welcoming people from as far away as China, Thailand South Africa and the USA!

ESHRE, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology grew out of suggestions from Professors Edwards, Cohen and others in the early 1980s. Now the meeting is held in a different country each year - this year it was Sweden and next year it's in Turkey.

The Distributor's dinner was held in the Chakula restaurant which offered unique South African food (yes, South African, in Sweden!). We wanted to avoid the ever popular but rather traditional Swedish Meatballs! We have a photo of most of the attendees receiving their new Planer t-shirt - fully clothed!
